EVERYday, January 20, 2018 — The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the first generic form of Viagra, the drug used to treat erectile dysfunction.
The first generic, Pfizer’s generic Viagra, will be available in two strengths of 50 milligrams (mg) and 100 mg, a dosage of 50 mg.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted approval to the second version, known as Cialis, which is a lower-dose version of the brand-name drug.
The drug is also indicated for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), a condition in which the right side of the heart is unable to pump enough blood to make an erection.
Pfizer is the manufacturer of the second and third generic versions, respectively. Cialis is the manufacturer of Viagra, the latter of which is sold as generic.
The FDA is the agency responsible for overseeing the quality and safety of drugs. The agency works closely with drug manufacturers to make sure that the drugs in question are safe and effective in treating any health condition.
“The FDA’s approval of the second generic and the FDA’s approval of the third generic are the most stringent and comprehensive FDA regulations to date,” said Janet Woodcock, the FDA’s acting director of research and development, in a statement. “The FDA’s stringent and comprehensive regulations ensure that pharmaceutical companies have a say in the FDA’s approval process and ensure that generic drugs are used as advertised.”
The FDA has also completed an extensive review of the drugs in question, which includes all FDA-approved drugs in the category of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), as well as all nonprescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs.
FDA Commissioner William Mar Boughtat, a former member of the FDA’s medical affairs team who is now the agency’s medical manager for pharmaceutical affairs, said that the agency is working closely with drug companies to ensure that the drugs in question are safe and effective.
“The goal is to ensure that physicians and patients are well-informed about the possible side effects of the drugs in question,” said Boughtat, who was vice chairman of the FDA from 1992 to 2001.
The FDA approval of the new generic Viagra comes after it has faced criticism over how it failed to disclose the side effects of the original formulation of the drug. The agency noted that Viagra had been approved for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, an indication for which the brand-name drug was still available, with other uses in Europe.
Viagra’s first generic version of the brand-name drug, Pfizer’s Cialis, was approved in May of 2016.
In April 2017, the FDA approved the generic version of Viagra for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, according to an FDA report. In June 2017, the FDA approved the generic version of Cialis for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, according to an FDA report.
In June 2018, the FDA approved the generic version of Viagra for the treatment of ED.
While the FDA approved Cialis for the treatment of ED, it approved other uses for the drug from 2018 until April 2020.
“While we do not currently have approval of the generic form of Viagra for PAH treatment, we will continue to have access to this product to patients,” Woodcock said in an email. “It will continue to be available to physicians, patients and other patients, regardless of treatment plans.”
Pfizer has previously issued an advisory about the approval of the generic version of Viagra, but it has not commented on whether it will use the brand-name drug in that form.

This is a rare, successful, and potentially life-saving drug. Because the drug is not approved by the FDA, there are no indications to tell patients or physicians why they may have erectile dysfunction.
